It was ok when mira sorvino won

But everyone is upset about marisa tomeis oscar, who by the way was nominated two times again later?

reply

I know what you mean. What I don't get is that Julia Roberts won for a performance that I think was nowhere as good, and no one has a problem with that. I don't think that she is anywhere as good an actress as Marisa, and just because she makes movies that make millions of dollars, that she should get the roles that Marisa could. I think that Marisa is a much better actress, is much prettier, and, unlike Julia doesn't have an annoying laugh. It shows how stupid the people that run Hollyweird are. They would rather make a third version of Carrie than something original.

reply

Because she wasn't competing with Roberts at the time, and being nominated 2 times later was later. People are upset due to the competition she was up against.

I am pleased that Tomei won in 92'. It was one of those surprise wins, that on it's own merits was still worthy, out of a year of strong competition.

The difference is that Mira Sorvino was the favorite. She had won the Golden Globe and lets not forget that she was nominated for a film directed by Woody Allen (Who was the director of My Cousin Vinny?)
Apparently the Oscar of Marisa came out of nowhere and without winning any other award before, although I think she is fantastic and steals the movie.

"Who was the director of My Cousin Vinny?"

The respected british actor Johnatan Lynne.
But I do agree with what you wrote, though.Still, nobody gave a hard time to Marcia Gay Harden when she won the oscar for POLLOCK in 2000.She was also the dark horse of the competition but since the movie she was in was a biopic, people let it go.

It all depends on the year and how strong the competition was. The backlash Tomei has copped, is that she was competing with what many would consider a formidable bunch of support nominees for 1992. I see it as one of those years, when anyone of the nominess could have had a valid reason for winning. I would put 1982 support actress in the same boat too.

1992: Rumours abound that Jack Palance read out the wrong name during his announcement of the Best Supporting Actress winner Marisa Tomei. In fact, this is impossible: only one name is ever on the card, the name of the winner. Marisa Tomei in fact thoroughly deserved to win for My Cousin Vinny (even though it was a surprise result). That said, Palance did seem to be in a somewhat “tired and emotional” state as he announced the award.
