Why was he so unpleasant to that interviewer?

When he and his band were being interviewed, he got all pissy at the interviewer for asking him about his life as an actor versus his life as a musician. So what? What's the big effin' deal about asking him that? I mean, who would not ask him about that? What an a-hole.

That was a unique situation. It was 6 am in Canada, he couldn't smoke and the guy's lack of wisdom. He's usually really nice to interviewers.

I suggest you to check any other of his interviews, for example "Inside the Actors Studio" one before calling him an a-hole.

If I recall correctly, the interviewer didn't even ask Billy anything about, or in contrast to, his acting. The interviewer simply mentioned that Billy Bob was an actor during the introductions to the interview.

Billy Bob acted like some petulant child, for no real reason at all. In fact, he ended up taking the attention away from his band anyway.

Turns out the interviewer is a likely sex offender.

It was 6 a.m. and apparently there was a prior agreement that they not mention acting and just focus on the music. The interviewer broke their agreement. To make matters worse the band seemed like they had been doing cocaine all night to me. Everybody seemed oddly tense even before the squabble started with Thorton and the interviewer. Pretty drunk and coked up IMO.

Check out the clip of the interview he did with Bruce Willis. A comedian from the 80s interviewed them. Bruce Willis was very nice, but Billybob Thorton tore into him and mocked him saying that he had no career and asked him if he was still seeing the same jokes that he did years ago. It was obvious that the interviewer was really embarrassed and it was uncalled for. This guy thinks he's hot stuff.
