Not received the recognition he deserves

I cannot believe that this actor has not received an Oscar. He is so versatile as his body of work shows. He was in MASH, Ordinary People, Pride and Prejudice, Animal House, The Eye of the Needle and The Eagle has landed.

Just watch that scene in JFK when he gives a crash course history to Kevin Costner's Jim Garrison about the secret government. He is amazing!

I've had a low opinion of him ever since I heard the story of how he and Elliott Gould both went to the chief of the studio to have Robert Altman fired from directing MASH because they disagreed with his treatment of the film. When that film became not only a box-office hit but a critical one as well, Gould contacted Altman and apologized for what he'd done and admitted he was wrong. Sutherland never said a word to Altman. It's one of the reasons that Gould went on to appear in many of Altman's subsequent films, but he never worked again with DS.

You could say he has received it by the number of movies he's been in!

reply

Yeah agreed. He has a very calm but strong presence in everything I've ever seen him in.
