I'm pretty sure he got hair plugs or some other expensive remedy at some point in the last 30 years. He probably hasn't needed a piece in years or decades.

He got a transplant some years ago. There is a picture of him with his bald spot from when he was doing theater. Its online somewhere in an old article. I will have to look for it.

There is a photo of him in a show that predated Star Trek by quite a few years. He looked fine but I can't blame him for wanting to retain a look more in line with his age at the time. Without it he easily put fifteen or twenty years on to his true age at the time.
