William Shatner Defends Anti-Autograph Policy Amid 'Star Trek' Fan Outcry

Fanboys can be as bad as SJWs.

In a recent Twitter rant, as San Diego Comic-Con was getting underway, the iconic Star Trek actor made it plain and clear: he will not sign an autograph or take a picture in public, so do not ask.

Shatner defended his policy after he was called "rude" by fans who felt there were times — outside of a setting where they have to pay for it — where it should be OK to approach the actor in a polite manner.

Shatner said no.

reply

I agree with the Shat. It's his life and his time.

reply

I agree there are times when it might be inappropriate to bother these individuals in their private life. But at the end of the day these celebrities owe everything they have to the fans who watch their shows and pay to see their movies. Is it really asking to much to stop and say hello or sign an autograph.

reply

He might be a dick, but this is a job. Entertainment is a job. These conventions are just part of the job. Fans do pay to see movies, but an actor's contract is with the studio or conventions and not the fans. Yeah, some celebs are generous with their time, but I can imagine after 50 ish years of "fans" wanting autographs and pictures can get really tiring. We might think that "yeah, is it really too much to just stop and sign something?" but where does one draw a line. If he does it for say 5 people, and then stops there will probably be 100 others around getting pissy about not getting one either. Would you expect a mechanic to fix an issue with a car for free just because it's outside of work hours? I have no issues with any celeb saying no.

As a celebrity, he owes you nothing. You pay money, and in return you get to see his movie, tv show, or whatever. At that point you're even.

So, in other words if I'm not making a buck off it.... Kiss off.
Nice Guy!

I think the Shat is a tool.

If I were Shatner and my long time friend and colleague died, I would go to the funeral. Nothing would prevent me from doing so.

He was doing a charity at the time of Nimoy's passing, and if it was me, I'd arrange a make up date and absent that possibility, would have written a check to the charity to cover what the charity would have made if I could have attended and gone to the funeral.

He's a many-multi-millionaire asshole.

reply

Is Nimoy going to Shatner's funeral? I'm sorry, but whether WS attends LN's funeral is not something to get hung up on.
Whatever their feelings for one another were, and how they express that isn't something I would indulge in.
And the less hullaballoo created at a celebrity funeral, the better, especially if the family wants to keep it dignified.

Actions speak volumes over words, and actions define character. Shatner may have a lot more money than I do, but I have a lot more character. I would have attended Nimoy's funeral and written a check to cover the loss of income the charity might have incurred. Shatner couldn't be bothered.

I'm not "hung up" on the fact that Shatner (multi-multi-millionaire Shatner) decided another paycheck was more important than attending the funeral of a friend of over 50 years.

If you think that's fine, then good for you. As for me, I know an asshole when I see one, and I'm not afraid to call them as I see them.

The Shat is an asshole.

Let's also not forget that he's 87 years old. I think it would be kind of a jerk move on a fan's part to demand anything out of anyone that age. I wouldn't bug him if I saw him in public. I would just be glad I got to see Captain Kirk in person if only for a second.
