No Super Rich Trekkies?

I guess there are no Trekkies who own private jets who could've helped William Shatner get to the funeral on time. You'd think that Bill Gates would be a Trekkie, but I guess not. Or Donald Trump who was at the charity.

I'm sure there are plenty of pilots who where inspired by Star Trek to get their wings in the first place and would have considered it an honor to get Shatner to Nimoy's funeral on time as well as any number of other options open to the guy. The bottom line is Shatner had a small conflict with the funeral and did not care enough about someone who he felt closer to than a brother to make it work.

It doesn't appear anyone offered to fly him out. You'd think Paramount would have sent a corporate jet for him considering all the money the franchise had made for them.

Shatner made the choice to help the living by fulfilling his commitment to raise money for a good cause.

And it was kind of cool that he chose to tweet with the fans about his friend instead of requesting privacy and to be left alone like many celebs do.

Funerals are phony, grotesque rituals. Shatner's thoughts and feelings about Nimoy are his alone, private. If people are upset because he didn't go look at Nimoy's dead body and put his emotions on public display, that's their problem.

I don't even want a funeral or wake or anything when I shuffle off. I don't want people staring at my dead body, poking me with sticks and the like.

reply

Yeah, me too. No mortuary employee at a lectern reading note cards about me to an audience of acquaintances who all wish they were someplace else. Forget that nonsense. Just burn me up in a backyard bonfire and plant the ashes by the sycamore tree, the end.

Shatner has since stated in his new book that he was not invited to the funeral (at the time he said it was due to the Red Cross charity conflict but he says now that this was something of a cover for him not being welcome/invited to the funeral. Probably to prevent any further distress to the family at the time I would think) apparently Nimoy stopped all contact with Shatner for the past few years of his life despite Shatner attempting to reconnect..😢

Its possible Nimoy didn't want Shatner to see him in his weakening state as his illness got worse (I recently read this was the case with Burt Lancaster not wanting his long term friend Kirk Douglas to see him after his illness/stroke) also its been stated by both at times they had a fierce rivalry especially during the original series..not so much the movies where they became close friends.. so it could be that rivalry element may have resurfaced when they weret working with each other anymore or even seeing each other on a regular basis any more.. (and there was the using footage of Nimoy at a convention in one of Shatner documentaries without his permission which Shatner feels could've been a contributing factor)

and maybe Nimoy and/or the family didn't want him at the funeral as it would bring an inescapable 'Wrath of Khan' element to the proceedings (Spocks funeral, Kirks eulogy) which would've possibly made the funeral too 'Star Trek' and too 'fantasy' (omg Kirks at Spocks funeral but for real!..which could've garnered unwelcome press intrusion) in overshadowing the passing of Leonard Nimoy the man/husband/father/grandfather/actor/artist etc
