Now let me state that although I have enjoyed his performances as James T. Kirk and other roles. Well I really am no fan of Kirk the character. Just like Shatner as an actor. So why has there been so much hatred for him for so long by both his fellow actors of Star Trek and numerous fans? Is William Shatner as awful as I have heard and read over the years? Have never met him nor seen the man in public so I do wonder if he is as terrible an individual as people have claimed for many years.

When they were starring in Star Trek TOS they weren't really close. They were co-workers so they saw a lot of each other due to the filming schedule. But they didn't really spend any time together outside of work. Then TOS ended, and they didn't really have any contact with each other. It wasn't until the late 1970s, when they started filming the first of the ST movies that they became close friends, but it was a very rocky friendship from what I understand. They would sometimes feud, stop talking to each other, than start up again and be close friends. Then in 2009, they had the last feud and they never made up after that. Nimoy died without ever reconciling with Shatner. Shatner has gotten a bad rap but I think he's just a very misunderstood person. It just seems like he's a hard person to befriend, and I take it he's had very few close friends in his life. Most people have just been acquaintances, and some of those feel indifferent about him, while others outright despise him and made no secret of it. And then it seems those few people who do befriend him have a lot of ups and downs in their friendship with him over the years. It's interesting that Nimoy was one of the few that befriended him and got to know him very well. I think it's sad that they didn't have any contact with each other for the last several years of Nimoy's life, and I bet not reconciling with Nimoy is one of Shatner's regrets in life.

Yeah that sounds about right.

yes I think you've summed it up perfectly there

I read somewhere (might have even been shatners Leonard book that read a while ago now) that shatner believes the last feud was down to including some convention footage of Nimoy in one of his recent Trek documentaries without Nimoys permission.. anyone familiar with Nimoy/Trek knows the difficulties he had with Paramount over the use of his image throughout the 70s (e.g. the Heineken beer advert) so maybe it touched a 'raw nerve' and Nimoy was aghast at shatners insensitivity? (it either being shatners fault thinking itd be ok or forgetting/not realising its impact, or one of the ones who helped put the doc together?). basically a last straw thing

It a great shame that Bill wasn't able to see Leonard in his final weeks/days whatever the reasons..

reply

Yeah Shatner hit Leonard's raw nerve by using Nimoy's image without asking permission. Nimoy must have been a very proud man and he simply could not get over Shatner's deed.

Shall we play a game?
