Whatever happened to Mickey Rourke?

Few actors have had as many ups and downs in their careers as Mickey Rourke — which is bizarrely fitting for a performer who fell into the film industry by mistake. He started boxing as a teenager and he was fully committed to his sport, but after taking part in a production of the play Deathwatch, he fell in love with acting and moved to New York City to attend the renowned Actors Studio. He appeared in critically acclaimed films like Diner, Rumble Fish, and Barfly, but also struggled with his burgeoning fame in the Hollywood environment of the '80s. He got involved in tumultuous relationships, spent his money recklessly, and earned a reputation for being difficult on the set.

Rourke eventually returned to boxing, but he sustained heavy injuries during his second act with the sport. He later made a triumphant return to acting when he starred in Darren Aronofsky's acclaimed drama The Wrestler, even earning an Academy Award nomination for Best Actor. But his momentum has faded since he scored that unlikely comeback, and these days, his career seems to be in another slump. What really happened to Mickey Rourke, and why has he had trouble maintaining success in Hollywood?

What happened to Rourke. I just don't think acting was the be all and end all for him, a bit like Marlon Brando in a way.

If he had the drive of a De Niro or Pacino, or was probably a bit more picky like a Day Lewis. He could have been a contender.. But for a while he was the best thing in American acting scene, Heavens Gate, Body Heat, Diner, Eureka, Rumble Fish, The Pope of Greenwich Village, Year of the Dragon, 9 1/2 Weeks, Angel Heart, Barfly and Johnny Handsome.

He Lost his way in the 90's, with his boxing career and plastic surgery. He did a lot of films below his talent but had moments when he shone Buffalo 66, Animal Factory, The Pledge, Spun, Once Upon a Time in Mexico, Man on Fire, Sin City and The Wrestler.

I Always thought he was a troubled soul (he had a pretty tough and abusive upbringing) and he was born with a gift that he just didn't really was fully in love with. Shame really.

As for Mickey Rourke, the main reason his comeback died quickly was that he was the first actor to publicly bad-mouth Marvel Studios. He complained that his character in Iron Man 2 was allegedly originally supposed to be written as more of a sympathetic villain and then it got changed (although there's really no evidence of this other than his claim), and vowed never to work with Marvel Studios again. Big mistake on his part.

As far as I am concerned his career has been up, down, up, down. That’s rather common and below the average the way I see it.
