Just sheer bad luck.

My sympathies to that poor kid, having to spend his youth being a cancer patient, and to anyone who loved him. Life can just suck, so find whatever joy and gratitude you can in life, no matter how imperfect your life is! You just never know when you'll be the one to get really, really unlucky.
