How/Why was he in Love Ranch?

He basically retired over 20 years ago. Since then he has appeared in three films. Robert De Niro had to beg him to make a small cameo in the Good Shepherd. Martin Scorsese had to ask him 50 times to start in The Irishman. If De Niro and Scorsese had such a hard time getting him in these movies (and they are his life long friends) then what made him star in Love Ranch? Does anyone know the circumstances behind it?

The chance to get to work with the great Helen Mirren?...maybe he owed Hackford a favor?...though based on a true story, it was an odd and uneven film...I do remember kinda liking it, but I watched it so long ago....interesting question, grimace...
