Too many to choose from but I'll say Carlito's Way.

Now we can handle this like gentleman or we can get into some old gangster sh*t

I liked the one where he pretended to be smarter than history and backed a communist thug, even viciously attacking and wishing death upon anyone who dared question him about it. And then when that country fell apart and the people he once strutted around claiming to be the champion of starved he said nothing, it was his most memorable performance ever, only matched by perhaps Danny Glover, Oliver Stone, Harry Belafonte and Kevin Spacey in the same production.

By the way the communist thug died the richest man in south America, funny how that worked out.

Tie between Milk and Dead Man Walking.

Several fine performances to choose from but I have to give another vote to Harvey Milk - Penn stepped outside of his comfort zone and created a full-blooded interpretation of an iconic figure, so much more than a mere impersonation of the kind that so often wins awards. A great performance.
