Has his voice permanently changed now?

Or was it just the last two performances I've seen of his where he looks like he has a lot of trouble talking (Warrior and Gangster Squad). He never used to talk like that did he?

No expectations, no disappointments.

He sounds like that in Parker too. He sounds like he's in an awful lot of pain, and he looks like he's swollen all over. He needs a doctor asap.

It will not improve. As a specialist told me regarding my mother in her last year of life (she died of breast cancer at 83) "The downside of living to a great age is that your body starts doing strange things to you."

If we lived forever it would be a mightily crowded world.

I wouldn't say that his voice is permanent, but I'd say that his lifestyle might be. He still smokes with a voice like that, and I'm pretty sure he's a drinker on top of who knows what else. I'll go ahead and say that his voice was alarming for a younger man in 48 hrs only to almost completely clear up when he did Cape Fear almost 10 years later. The only difference was the fact that he'd lost weight and appeared healthier. His voice was completely clear and far less raspy than in 82.

I recall a review for '48 Hours', which described him as sounding like a rusty drainpipe & looking like an unmade bed.'

I love his work--regardless.

Great actor, but kind of painful to watch in the Walk in the Woods trailer. I have my vices, so I'm not one to moralize, but he's not a man who has lived his life like he was going to make it to 70, and it shows.

Robert Redford, on the other hand, looks great.

reply

Nolte's voice was certainly raspy in A walk in the woods.

I had to remind my wife that Redford is several years older than him.

It's that man again!!

reply

He talks weird in Adam Sandler's new movie as well.
