People tend to forget what a great actor he was

Beneath the self-parodying gruff image, scrapes with the law, etc., going back to North Dallas Forty and his final "Isn't that giving something back?" speech, to his artist in the Scorsese short "Life Lessons," culminating in that amazing childhood rape recollection in The Prince Of Tides, Nick at his best is a keenly-aware, detail-oriented actor. Even in potboilers like Cape Fear he brings a riveting tension to the tormented lawyer, far more interesting than De Niro's more showy turn as the psychotic Max Cady. It's a damn shame the Academy didn't acknowledge his talents back then when he was at his peak. Even in his later worn years he's a presence of deep feeling and majesty.

He has always been underrated by Hollywood. He deserved an Oscar for his role in Prince of Tides. I hope that he gets another chance to win one before he passes away. He deserves to win one before Will Smith does. So does Gary Oldman, for that matter.

reply

Yes. He is capable of amazing performances and his 3 Oscar nominations confirm that!

reply

I agree he’s very good imo.

reply

I disagree with The Prince of Tides - I think he's miscast in that dreadful potboiler - but yes, he's a great actor. Most of his films are not all that good, but he usually is. I agree that he (and Jessica Lange) outclasses the hammy De Niro in Cape Fear.

My favourite Nolte role is in Under Fire. A great performance.

What do you think of 48 Hours, U Turn, Affliction, The Thin Red Line, and The Good Thief?

reply

The Thin Red Line is brilliant, and he is memorable in it. 48 Hours is fun. I wasn’t a big fan of Affliction but he was very good. I haven’t seen the others… I did start U-Turn many years ago but don’t think I finished it!

reply

Robert Redford would have been a better fit for The Prince of Tides.

reply

One of my favs when he was in his prime.

Is he working regular now,??? > I don't know.
Is he dead, oh God.
I have to check.

NO

AWESOME.

He and Eddie Murphy could do another 48 HRS sequel and call it 24 HRS cuz we too old for this shit.

reply

One of my favourite actors. He was awesome when he was in his prime. I'm just watching Affliction. I really miss seeing him in movies. Once in a while I go back to his older movies to get my Nolte dose, lol.

reply

He is still good. His recent selection in roles...not so much. His last great performance in a great movie was Warrior and that was in 2011.

reply

Yeah his recent roles haven't been that good, but he still got it. Got to agree with you that Warrior was his last great performance. But what an amazing and powerful performance it was, made me cry.
