Has Any Comedic Actor Ever Come Close to '80s Eddie Murphy?

From 1982 to 1989, Eddie Murphy starred in 9 films. Three of these films (Best Defense, Beverly Hills Cop II, and Harlem Nights) are either completely forgettable, terribly mediocre, or both. However, let's take a look at his other six films:

1) 48 Hours: Borderline classic comedy.

2) Trading Places: BIG TIME classic comedy.

3) Beverly Hills Cop: BIG TIME classic comedy.

4) The Golden Child: Originally a flop, but now a cult classic.

5) Eddie Murphy Raw: One of the greatest stand-up films ever made.

6) Coming To America: BIG TIME classic comedy.

Not only have most of these films stood the test of time, but I am now hard pressed to think of any other comedian who had an equally stellar streak in their career. Only three other comedians come to mind that one could make an argument for: Adam Sandler, Jim Carrey, and Will Ferrell.

I would say Jim Carrey. He had 3 massive hits in 1994:
The Mask
Dumb and Dumber
Ace Ventura

reply

In a ten-year period he had The Mask, Ace Ventura, Dumb and Dumber, Liar Liar, and Me, Myself, & Irene. Not a bad spread.

If we are speaking strictly "going big", and not necessarily "hilarious", Kevin Hart is getting up there. Dude is in EVERYTHING...getting annoying, frankly.

Dane Cook (who I think is terrible) had a moment in the sun...two back-to-back HBO specials, a few movie deals, and everyone I knew was quoting him.

Strongly agree on Jim Carrey. Although, years later, his career is doing MUCH better than Murphy's.

reply

I'd say a lot of comedians end up being red hot and then cool off. The question is how hot do they get. Eddie Murphy was one of the best in the 90s though for sure.

reply

I'd agree with th OP: Adam Sandler, Jim Carrey and Will Ferrell. I'd say now, Seth Rogen is also beginning to have a hot film career. This Is the End, Neighbors and his new film The Interview coming out soon

Robin Williams - Four Oscar nominations, and one Oscar for Best Supporting Actor for Good Will Hunting. Nine $100,000,000+ films between 1987 and 1998. Aladdin being the highest-grossing film 0f 1992, and Mrs. Doubtfire holding the spot for 2nd highest-grossing film of 1993, only after Jurassic Park, which became the highest-grossing film of all time. Robin has been the most successful stand-up - turned - dramatic actor thus far. Jim Carrey keeps trying, but even considering his box office success of the 1990's, he's painfully unfunny in my opinion. Just extremely obnoxious, and narcissistic.

reply

I would have to say no. IMOA he is by far the best. I wish he did more work.

Adam Sandler

I Now Pronounce You Chuck & Larry - originally a classic, now a CLASSIC
Jack & Jill - BIG TIME classic
That's My Boy - BIG TIME classic
Grown Ups 2 - CLASSIC classic
Blended - CLASSICALLY CLASSIC classic

Golden Child was a flop? I wasn't aware being the eight highest grossing film of 1986 and making back more three times its budget was considered a flop.

Otherwise yeah, a fine list. BHCII is underrated though.
