Once Had Great Potential

Matthew Modine starred in a succession of sound movie productions at the beginning of his career i.e Full Metal Jacket, Memphis Belle and Gross Anatomy

He even turned down the Maverick lead in Top Gun; resulting in Tom Cruise's A list status.

Then his career seemed to come to a standstill; for reasons unknown to me.

Recently, he has reappeared in supporting roles and I think what his career could have been.

An undervalued talent ...

Thanks to Chris Nolan, he'll be in a blockbuster soon!

Those films were the extent of his potential. Once Cutthroat Island was released his true audience appeal became apparent. He lacks the charisma to be an A list star.

It would be even better if there were no Matthew Modine. Goddamn it, I can't stand that guy. He couldn't act his way out of a barrel. He is such a monotone personality that they could replace him with a robot and I wouldn't be able to tell the difference. He is the male version of Kim Basinger. He is more wooden than January Jones in X-Men: First Class. The could place a statue of him in the movie and have Stephen Hawking do the voice over and it would be a better performance. The only reason that guy has any clout is because he lucked out and got the role of Joker in Full Metal Jacket. And I'll bet the only reason Kubrick hired him was because he was the acting equivalent of a supermodel; an emotionless coat hanger upon which to hang things which are actually of value. Through this wooden stoner moron, Kubrick could display the beauties and horrors of war without having to actually worry that the audience would give a fuck about the main character.

Modine seemed to be doing fine and his career dived after Cutthroat Island.

He had a interesting career and was in some good movies from about 1988 to 1990 with Full Metal Jacket, Married To The Mob, Memphis Belle, and Pacific Heights and then sort of fell off. It is interesting watching Full Metal Jacket and then Married To The Mob, two completely different movies and characters so close together.

Jesus Christ dimwit! This guy has been doing theatre during all those years you thought him inactive! There is life beyond Full Metal Jacket and Stranger Things. I'm looking up now at my poster for Resurrection Blues, the Robert Altman-directed play at the Old Vic in.London right before he died in 2006 with Modine in the cast.

He's up there with bland actors who got a lot of work in Hollywood like Loren Dean, John Heard, Bill Pullman, etc. They got some high profile work that would have made them household names but they all eventually faded into the ether.

I thought his early career was B-list teen flicks like Private School and Vision Quest. He did get a few good roles in those films mentioned.
