I heard this statement as well as a few others recently that I have found disturbing. I know that all actors are afraid of becoming type casted in roles, but many were also paid well for these roles. I have understood that she had a wonderful contract, one of the best for any actor at the time and was one of the top paid performers of the 1940s musicals.
I get a little outdone with some of the interviews and things done with stars and others in the industry, where they feel like they need to be politically correct and try to look at the films of a by-gone era, through the eyes of today. Why can we not just enjoy the art and performances of these wonderful actors who can no longer speak for themselves and not interject the lifestyles of the 21st Century on them. These people did so much for their craft and paved the way for so many of the actors today ~ they were the pioneers of there industry and no, nothing is ever perfect for those who are setting precedent. They have to go to that proverbial school of hard knocks, so those who come after can learn from it.
As for Carmen, I love her! She is wonderful, funny, beautiful and creative. She died way too young and I am so glad she left us with such wonderful musical and comedies for generations to see.
