Wife beater

Hollywood superagent Sue Mengers said that of all the horrible people she met in Hollywood over the years, McQueen was by far the most heinous. Beat every woman he was with. Terrorized Ali McGraw. I can't watch "Bullit," which is on TCM tonight, without thinking about him using Ali as a punching bag.

Don't know about the wife beating but Steve was a very highly trained actor. I believe he attended 3 NY acting schools in the early 50s that were extremely hard to get into.

As with others in Hollywood, McQueen, as a screen player, was great when they fit him well to the character he was playing . . . then the story & film would come alive . . . he had a powerful screen persona . . .

It's nice that a McQueen nerd will defend his idol against *any* accusation... and it's nice that drive-by posters like you and the op (who hasn't returned to back up his post) keep parroting the same rumors. asking people to back up their statements doesn't make them a nerd.

...but he was a wife-beater.you can't possibly know for sure; no one outside of those involved knows the truth. no mcqueen biography even goes there aside from saying it was "rumored", and that's only one or two out of nearly 20 books.

Wives defended him in public, of course. Still, insiders no.and ex-wives often trash their husbands after they're divorced. i suppose you're one of those "insiders who no".

you mention james garner's book and his opinions, but garner's opinion doesn't end the debate. richard attenborough said mcqueen had the ability to be a great character actor if he lived longer, and attenborough worked with mcqueen more than garner did. so who do we believe, garner or attenborough?

Who says he's my "idol"? And what's a "McQueen nerd" - is that similar to a "Garner" nerd?

"....sickly competitive guy who backstabbed his friends if there was a role he wanted (supported by James Garner's memoir, e.g..."

I suppose all those people who knew and worked with McQueen over the years I've had the privilege of talking to at McQueen film events, such as Robert Vaughn, Don Gordon, crew members and others, are full of crap. None of what they say matches what you contend.
