Has he ever played good characters?

As far as I know, he's been always playing scumbags.

This will be the only comment or reply you'll get. Like I give a sh!t about YOUR interwebz opinion.

Time After Time (1979)

He plays protagonist H.G. Wells vs. Antagonist Jack the Ripper played by a very menacing David Warner.

He played Dr. Sam Loomis in Rob Zombie's Halloween's. He was really an ass in H2, with no redeemable qualities (except maybe the end in the director's cut). But in its predecessor, I thought he was great as Loomis. Nobody will ever own the role like the late Donald Pleasance did, but McDowell was great in the 2007 remake!

Mick in O' Lucky Man. He was a little overly ambitious but not really a bad person.
