His best comedic role is as Alan Conway in the very underrated Color Me Kubrick.

For best dramatic role, I'd say Biff in Death of a Salesman or Basie in Empire of the Sun.

The trouble is, for every good performance by Malkovich, there are about a dozen terrible ones, especially in recent years.

i actually really love him in The Sheltering Sky. it is one of my favorite books and I don't care what Paul Bowles thought of the film, I thought Malkovich did a great job portraying Port Moresby.
I also love him in Making Mr. Right, he is so lovely in that. Others I really enjoyed are Of Mice and Men, Being John Malkovich (of course) and The Object of Beauty.

But my all-time favorite has to be Dangerous Liaisons. He can do no wrong as Valmont as far as I'm concerned.

That's really hard to say, but he's so sexy as Valmont in Dangerous Liaisons.
