Can we have a mature discussion on the work she has done to her face?

Listen, I love Virginia Madsen and I have followed her career for years and years. I think she is a talented thespian that elevates whatever project she is in, even if it's a so-so film. Virginia has always been open about her use of Botox (http://www.people.com/people/archive/article/0,,20062270,00.html) and I always found that fearless and open of her to talk about it.
However, I've noticed that within the past 2 years something has changed. Her face looks beyond puffier, almost like she might have elected for minor cheek implants. It breaks my heart to talk about this but I just wanted to know your opinions. I don't think it's simply weight gain, because her face looks oddly disproportionate to the rest of her.

It's been distracting and I've been trying to look the other way but it's there. Maybe it's her body reacting to some hormone changes that's affecting her facially? I don't know, but I do know that she looks quite different now (and that it's not just aging).

She was a hottie back in the day and simply luminous in Sideways, however these days the plastic surgery use is incredibly distracting, she has gone overboard. Such a shame.

It could be facial fillers like Juvederm or Restylane , or it could be medication related. Kathleen Turner gained a lot of weight and puffiness to her face because of medication she takes for rheumatoid arthritis.

Okay I went looking online doing a Google image search on her and cannot find even one picture of her that makes her look very different than normal. I noticed that in some photos she appears different ages and some photos appear to be different characterizations and so her appearance is adjusted to fit them but as far as her possibly having had surgery, I don't see it. Perhaps you could post links to illustrate what you are talking about

Why do the actresses always go overboard with it?

I loved her in the 80's & 90's. Now not so much.

I think you are wrong. She has matured more gracefully than most of the actresses in her age group and younger.

I find it interesting that in The Hot Spot" she was cast as the "older woman" opposite Jennifer Connelly who was young and beautiful and voluptuous then and now looks like something the cat dragged in (after an unnecessary nose job, breast reduction, plenty of Botox and that enormous chip on her shoulder, and G_d knows what else to the point that she is a shadow of her former self) and yet Virginia, who is nine years older still looks fabulous and NATURAL and has had her bad times but has not let them harden her as Jennifer has.
