Not many people know it, but a big reason why Tim was never a bigger star after his Oscar win was a holding deal he was under with MGM. They wanted him to make some bullshit cowboy movie, and told him not to take big projects in the meantime. So he waited and waited, and MGM eventually had to admit the movie was cancelled at their request. He sued them for lost wages (because by the late 80s, his career trajectory was basically set in stone), and got $10 million out of the bastards. This arguably caused some of the major studios to steer clear of him, and surely jaded him about the business.
