Is Hurt the greatest film actor to have never won an Oscar?

Very possibly IMHO.

RIP:
David Bowie (1947-2016)
Alan Rickman (1946-2016)
Prince (Rogers Nelson) (1958-2016)

Thinking about it right now, no others come to mind... you may be correct.

There are many greats who have been overlooked, and some who have won and did not deserve.
Actors who have not won the Oscar, and who are great;

James Dean
Gary Oldman
Peter O'Toole
Richard Harris
John Turturro
Ralph Fiennes

I didn't list female actors as there are too many overlooked.
Who is best is subjective, so I won't argue "the best overlooked". But John Hurt is unarguably one the greatest actors ever to grace the screen. I've been a fan of his since Heaven's Gate.

Looking only at male actors, I would name Edward G. Robinson as the greatest never to win an Oscar - and indeed he was never even nominated! John Hurt is probably among the greatest living actors who have never won an Oscar, although there are plenty of others who can make the same claim.

Well let's hope he can shake off this unenviable position, or at least gain another Oscar nomination for his supporting performance as a priest in the film JACKIE!

Great list, but in terms of sheer range and body of work, I'd put (the now sadly late) John Hurt above even those greats.

His Elephant Man is one of the most powerful pieces of acting ever.

RIP. 

Last Seen Films: Rogue One - 9/10, Silence - 10/10, La La Land - 10/10

Reading your post made me feel sad again, knowing the nominations have already been announced...

reply

He as three films due out in 2017 and one of them is the high profile DARKEST HOUR not much good to Mr Hurt but would love him to win or get nominated at least posthumsesly like Heath Ledger and Peter Finch
