i'm sorry but i think he acted terribly in his sequel movies

i know people say he was terrible in the original trilogy but i liked hims in those.

I honestly don't blame him for the bad acting. He would have done a perfectly fine job being Luke again....save for how he was written. I actually read that Mark Hamil objected very loudly to the script about the way Luke was portrayed, and he probably would have quit before filming began, had he not signed a contract first. I seriously think he got shafted by TLJ.

reply

yeah it was written for him to growl and act immature and pissy, i bet he probably would have acted better as a suave, wise, grown up hero.

reply

Honestly, sometimes it's better to consult actors who know their character really well to write a better story. Neither Abrams, nor Rian could be bothered with that, so that's why we get a shitty script that portrays our favorite characters in a way that is contradictory to how they would have really behaved. They were written by people who didn't care about the franchise, or the characters, and just wanted a quick cash grab.

Agree. i even go as far as to costumes and look too...For me, personally, it wasn't Luke Skywalker at ALL. There is this idea in Star Wars that everything has to Rhyme and that Luke has to now portray this 'prequel era' Jedi and that was NEVER Luke to me.

Oh! He has to wear a beard like Obi Wan! Um...no, he doesn't. He looks better clean shaven; that's Luke.

Oh! he has to wear long Jedi robes! Um no....he doesn't...this is now a 50-60year old clothing style; Luke never wore anything like this and it doesn't fit his character.

But I guess that is what the fans expected to see; I just don't agree with it. That was not Luke in those movies and I am sorry for Mark Hamill having to do it.

i didn't like the sequel movies, yes, but he even looked weird with his cloak on and stuff.

reply

Eh I thought his acting in the Last Jedi was OK despite the fact that I hate everything they did to his character.

His acting in Rise of Skywalker was once again bland, soulless and way too overboard with the fan service that Jar Jar Abrams is so obsessed with.

reply

I bring this up slightly in an above post. My problem is this thinking that ALL Jedi need to be stoic and soulless. Luke had spirit and life. Even in return of the Jedi when he finally mastered his powers he was human. Caring and funny. THAT'S the Luke I love. But ever since the Prequels came out (and even in the EU books I guess) there's this need to make Jedi completely like monks. expressionless, mysterious, passive, and BORING. and that's just not Luke to me at all. I can guarantee the way Luke acted was the way he was told to act.

It's the same thing they do in the Mandalorian for his appearance. He now fights like any prequel jedi; none of the ticks or form that Luke has. They even had him fighting IN his robe which...just logistically made no sense to me. It was only to add mystery but everyone knew who it was. Did he keep the robe on when fighting the Rancor? no. then him doing the whole Stoic thing. I just think Luke has more life and gentleness to him than what is portrayed now because NOW, there is a certain way all Jedi need to act regardless of how Luke was in the original movies.

People may not agree with me. Maybe I make no sense. I have just watched the originals all my life but also have an interest in theater and character development and just don't like how they decided to portray Luke here. I could say the same with Han and Leia but this is about Luke, haha

He was terrible in the first films, he was terrible in every other movie he made outside of Star Wars, like Corvette Summer and The Big Red One.... The reality is if he was even a mediocre actor studios would have been signing him up for lots of movies to capitalize on his connection to a big franchise like Star Wars - but they didn't.

He is good at doing voice work, I give him props for that... but as an actor he has and always will be shitty.

reply

He's very theatrical and would do MUCH better on stage. It is funny how Star Wars (the originals) brings out something different in him that couldn't be translated to other mainstream things. But he found his niche in voice work. But he definitely comes off more of a character actor than romantic lead; which is why he didn't have the chances Ford had after Star Wars.

reply

I'm afraid the only reason he would do better on stage is that fewer people would suffer through any of his performances. The only connection I see with him to stage work is that he often over acts like so many high school drama kids.

reply

He was good in the OT. He's great in The Last Jedi.

reply

He agreed to those movies without reading a script.

When he read it he said "That's not my Luke!"

reply

I really liked his performance in the sequels a lot. He elevated the material and that's saying something because that material was bad.

He was pretty good in the OT as well, I think, and I know people have said he's terrible, but I can't honestly see why (with the sole exception of one line in Return of the Jedi, "That's why I have to go!" which is...he did what he could with it).

reply

in conclusion, i stand by my claim that he is a terrible actor in the sequel movies.
