Is Hamill the most gracious (in real life) of the main cast members?

I was reading about the original cast members of Star Wars. It's not pretty:

Harrison Ford - hates interviews, especially those that mention Star Wars

Carrie Fisher - former drug-addict

Alec Guinness - threw away fan mail about Star Wars

Anthony Daniels - in a long-running feud with Kenny Baker
Kenny Baker - in a long-running feud with Anthony Daniels

Peter Mayhew - seems to be gracious about the whole thing

David Prowse - trash-talks the movie, in a long-running feud with George Lucas

Mark Hamill seems to be the best of the bunch. I recently listened to an interview he did years ago (promoting 2013's Sushi Girl) and he was happy to discuss Star Wars, the making of it, and the effect it had on his life.

The worst I can say about him is that he packed on the pounds a few years ago, but now he's back in shape.

As someone who's now a Star Wars fan again after The Force Awakens, it would seem that Hamill turned out to be the best of the main cast in terms of not being cranky or bitter or drug-addled. He's super-gracious, and I've never heard of him complaining. Thoughts?

Yes I've always had that impression for years. Even before the Prequels came out in the late 90s, I had that impression. Mark Hamill was the actor (whose face wasn't covered up by makeup or a mask) that was the most thrilled to just be part of the ride. Harrison Ford and Carrie Fisher always acted like they were too cool for Star Wars, and Sir Alec Guiness acted like he was too intellectual and sophisticated for Star Wars. But Mark Hamill, he didn't care. He embraced the fans and the franchise.

Yeah he comes off as a good guy & has a healthy view of the whole thing. It made his career & it made millions of people happy. He probably would have loved to have had other roles as big but he understands the importance of what he's done. He made a lot of people happy.

reply

@Little Caesar He made a lot of people happy.
And he's making a lot of people happy with the new Star Wars, including me.

It's great to see someone who isn't ungrateful continue to keep working.

@Joel_S Harrison Ford and Carrie Fisher always acted like they were too cool for Star Wars...
I didn't get that impression from Carrie Fisher. I figured that she just got into drugs, as a lot of actors do, and that's how she got screwed up.

The sheer lack of gratitude the original cast displays is saddening. Who would give a crap about Harrison Ford without Han Solo. He would never have been Indiana Jones or... well, anything, without it. Same with Carrie Fisher. Who would care about Anthony Daniels, or Peter Mayhew, or any of these other guys if Star Wars hadn't have put them on the map.

Really? That's super disappointing about Ford. Just a question....why is being a former addict a strike against Fisher? She's clean now as far as we know.

Ford & Fisher were probably no different than other actors of the 70's. They probably saw the film as being mostly for children. Remember, there were very few films targeted towards kids back then. The ones that were like Herbie the car weren't in the scale of Star Wars. I remember everything was Saturday morning cartoons & a few shows like Six Million Dollar Man. Everything else was for adults.
The movies then were so cynical & gritty. Godfather, French Connection, Taxi Driver, Serpico, One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest. Great films but not really for a younger audience. Not until the late 70's when you had Star Wars & Superman did Hollywood embrace the younger audience. Ford & Fisher probably didn't initially recognize the importance of the film.

Yes, he and Peter Mayhew seem to be the best in relation to fans, especially. Peter once appeared in full costume as Chewbacca for some ailing child, I read, just because the kid's one wish was to meet Chewie.

I've never heard anything bad about Mark (though he did sort of lampoon his status on a show called "Just Shoot Me", where David Spade's character meets Mark and bugs him with a ton of questions about Star Wars and Mark gets annoyed by it).
