But we were of course, told that she died in the hospital. Then again, I heard that it's pretty much customary to declare the person dead at the hospital. Otherwise, they'd have to keep everyone on the plane.

shareI've never managed to find the details, but I believe CPR was done on the flight. Which basically means yes, her heart had stopped and she was either dead or so close to dead as makes no difference on the airplane.
FYI very few people survive a situation where their heart stops and they have to have CPR and mechanical venilation and all that, but the odds increase if the person can get into an ambulance and a hospital within a few minutes. If your heart stops on an airplane, there isn't much hope.
