People always blame alcohol or non legal drugs but some of those drugs dished out by doctors can have really dangerous side effects.

The rabidly anti-drug crusaders would rather use this sad occasion to weave cautionary tales than consider that a 60 yr old woman with her particular issues might've mixed meds wrong, despite that Carrie would not have seemed the type to snort coke before a long international flight. Seems very likely that the internet reaction to revealing the Ford affair coupled mixed with the stresses of interview schedules and constant travel probably did have her on a small cocktail of meds to sleep and deal with physical and mental discomfort.

I didn't know she was bi-polar. There's suspicions that anti depressants for a start are linked to some shootings and aggressive behaviour

She admitted to taking 6 RX drugs to fight bipolar/schizophrenia/depression and god knows a host of other things.
She lost a ton of weight for Star Wars, so add in some diet pills.

She said a few years ago that she took seroquel for her bipolar condition.
I had a friend that took this drug for a while, as did I years ago when I was mis-diagnosed. It's a serious drug and has very strong hypnotic properties.
She also had insomnia, so I guess this was the right fit for her. She never let it take her personality.
