What the Hell Happened to Linda Fiorentino?

https://lebeauleblog.com/2014/01/04/what-the-hell-happened-to-linda-fiorentino/

Linda Fiorentino was a rising star and a major sex symbol in the mid-nineties. She scored critical acclaim with her role as a femme fatale in the neo noir film, The Last Seduction. Then she achieved mainstream success in the sci-fi comedy blockbuster, Men in Black. A few short years later amid rumors of difficult behavior, Fiorentino’s career had cooled to the point where she essentially retired.

What the hell happened?

Do you want to know how you can go from an A list mostly movie actress who everyone calls the next big thing and has directors lining up to work with you and then have it all gone in an instant? And when I mean all gone, I mean it was all gone. There is no more working for her at all. No straight to on demand. No guest spot in television. She went from everything to nothing because she ticked off the wrong people. There was no one that was left unscathed. Our actress hit her box office peak in one of the biggest movies of all time. It was also the beginning of the end and she wasn't invited back for the sequel. She was that toxic. She slept with directors and producers of both sexes and then she would talk bad about them to the next person she slept with. She was a pain to work with on every set she ever stepped foot on and was always late and usually half in the bag. She had really large weight fluctuations and whenever anyone would cross her about any of her issues she would pull out her phone and call one of the people she was sleeping with and threaten them if they didn't do something about the person giving her grief. It was as if the entire world banded together to keep her out of any other movies and no one has ever gone back on it. There was one brief attempt by our actress to mount a comeback in a film about a half decade ago after a five year absence, but the movie was bought by a company specifically so it would never see the light of day. That sounds like it was written by a lawyer paid handsomely by Harvey Weinstein. Wasn’t that his m.o.? Ruin an actress’ reputation and career if she refused his foul advances?

reply

I wondered that too. I was just rewatching MIB and remembering how how good she was at the time - then you look her up on IMDB and she effectively disappeared by the end of the 90s. We'll probably never know if it was her decision or she pissed off the wrong people by saying no or she genuinely was difficult - perhaps even almost as difficult as the male stars? It would be interesting if she popped up again to tell her story.

reply

This does sound suspiciously manufactured. Perhaps she turned Weinstein down.

reply

Agreed. It paints her in an unusually brutal light. She can't have been THAT bad surely? It's like a caricature of a prima donna actress who sleeps around for professional gain, is lazy/unprofessional and bullies everyone in sight.

reply

If she was “Weinstein’d” she could have spoken up during the height of MeToo. Lots of women broke their NDAs with the Weinstein companies and there were no repercussions, (except for Weinstein).

reply

There are pictures of Weinstein and Fiorentino together at premieres. Knowing how he was, I'm sure he tried make a move on her...I wouldn't at all be surprised if she did reject him and got 'blacklisted' due to his smear campaign.

I don't believe all that.

reply

Sounds like code for "She was intelligent and honest." Most people, especially people with power, hate to see those traits in others because they neither have those traits nor understand how to go about getting them.

reply

Will Smith used a neurelizer on her.

reply

Wasn't it a DEnuerelizer?

reply

Spelt it wrong. Apparently it's a 'neuralyzer' and the deneuralyzer is a room to reverse the effects of it. According to Lord Wikipedia.

reply

Hmmm. Cause I remember will smith explaining in MIB 2 that, that is the DEnuerelizer

I saw something with her in it a few months ago and was wondering the same thing. She is getting up there in age, and she doesn't have a lot of credits in IMDB. When I hear "difficult to work with" I think of BS like Harvey Weinstein and how he killed careers of women by claiming that or spreading those rumors. She was very attractive. She should have done more.

reply

Iirc, Kevin Smith said that she was a bit difficult, and he's worked with Bruce Willis. I think he said she wasn't totally awful or anything, but still...difficult.

reply

Yeah. I think he said he should have cast Janeane Garofalo as the lead instead

Loved LF in After Hours and The Last Seduction, very sexy. I hope she's happy with whatever she is doing now.
And she is my age. Hey Linda, if you're out there, look me up !

Not everyone wants to be a sex symbol recognized by every person on the street, is my guess.

reply

She probably got Weinsteined by someone.

Here's the nail in the coffin for Linda Fiorentino's career: "In the early 2000's Linda Fiorentino was also involved/sleeping with sleazy Anthony Pellicano, who was known as a celebrity "fixer" and was charged with numerous crimes including racketeering, conspiracy, and wire tapping. In an attempt to help Pellicano Linda then slept with an FBI agent, convinced him to break the law by copying confidential information from U.S. Govt. computers and then she passed that data over to Pellicano's lawyers. Pellicano has spent the last 15 years in prison, finally getting released in March, 2019."

Ms. Fiorentino seems to have grossly overestimated her appeal as a performer.

While she was decent actor and an attractive woman, she was already in her mid 30s when she began to be noticed. Unfortunately in Hollywood unless a female performer really hits at the box office in that age range, it's “Mommy roles" or “best friend” until it's time for “Grandma” roles. In Fiorentino's case, none of those were really “viable”.

For reasons that have never been made clear, despite being an integral part of Men In Black, she wasn't asked to return for the sequels. And while people claim that her negative interactions with director Kevin Smith during the making of the film Dogma damaged her career, the film itself was a relatively low budget which was barely acknowledged at the box office when it was released.

Fiorentino has been unable to land a television series, her last film role was a short nearly 10 years and has largely been forgotten by the industry. Since she's now 63, it's a virtual certainty that her career as a leading actor is over. At best, she could become a character actor on television and perhaps some arthouse films. However even that is slim hope as she just hasn't been building up her resume over the last two decades.

Maybe Fiorentino will write her memoirs and explain her decisions and happened. Unless and until she does, all we can do is to speculate.

Supposedly, Tommy Lee Jones would only agree to doing Men in Black 2 if Linda Fiorentino was NOT brought back. Who knows what really went down between the two.

Kevin Smith, who directed Linda in "Dogma" said she was a pain in the ass to work with and badmouthed her for many years afterword.

Producers of a planned Georgia O'Keeffe biopic sued Linda, claiming she bailed out on them, effectively shutting down production. Linda countersued, claiming the producers added nude scenes and simulated sex scenes to the script without her approval.

If anything, Linda was probably too vocal and headstrong for Hollywood, à la Debra Winger. They want their young leading ladies to be pliant.

In addition to her reputation as being difficult to work with, Fiorentino probably did her career no favors by a) dating Anthony Pellicano, and b) pretending to date an FBI agent in order to manipulate him into giving her restricted information that could help Pellicano's case, which she gave to Pellicano's lawyers. Considering just how many people went to jail over the Pellicano stuff, it's kind of surprising that Linda was never charged nor prosecuted.
