Can folks explain to me

Why Benjamin Button is so terrible? I really liked it, didn't think it was perfect, but I liked the story.

I liked it myself. It has to be the most underrated David Fincher film.

I really like Button, but there were reasons why it was attacked.

1. It came from Fincher. It's his first warm drama, and that's unusual of him.
2. It was overly sentimental for some people.
3. It followed Forrest Gump in too many places (Eric Roth co-wrote both).
4. It competed with Slumdog Millionaire for Best Picture in the year of the underdog.

It wasn’t terrible.

But it didn’t really work all that well either. There isn’t much one can point to in explaining that because it SHOULD have worked better than it did.

Speaking for myself, I just didn’t end up caring all that much. And I am a HUGE Fincher fan. I just love the guy’s work to death. I love it enough to admit that Button could have been much better.

I suspect the magic trick of the film might have gotten in the way of the emotion. Of caring for everybody in the film who we were meant to care about.

But I don’t know. What I can say is I do NOT hate the movie. It is beautiful. However, as someone who compulsively watches Fincher’s work several times over I’ve yet to revisit this film even once. And I own it on bluray.

I do plan to give it a lot again soon just because I’m hankerin’ for fresh Fincher and that’s the one I remember the least. So maybe it’ll be almost like fresh Finch to me.

I like Dragon Tattoo MUCH better, but there’s a similar disconnect with a lot of people and the film, too. The not caring. I did. But again i’d have to admit maybe given the story I should have cared a lot more.

People probably attacked it because they thought it was overly saccharine. I thought it was an okay movie. 

When I became a man I put away childish things, including the fear of childishness.
