A fairly limited director.

It seems like he's content to make the same movie over and over again, the dark psychological thriller with emphasis on gritty urban drama.

Just for once, it would be nice for him to make a screwball comedy, or maybe war film. Or a feel-good road trip movie.

Then again, he tried his hand at romance in Benjamin Button, and fell all over himself. Maybe he should stick to his little niche.

True, but look at all the praise he gets for these glossy versions of B-movies. It's no surprise he keeps at it...his work goes completely unchallenged. People actually act like they're blown away by GONE GIRL. *beep* kidding me?!

Sure, BENJAMIN BUTTON was a pretentious awful mess, but I'd rather he take those kinds of risks again or maybe even actually write something of his own. If he truly wants to earn his "auteur" status, maybe he should author something from start to finish.

Why do people want certain directors to be different than they are? People cry out that Nolan does the same movies, Fincher does the same, didn't Hitchcock do the same for crying ot loud?
Maybe they need to look for other movies and other directors.

I agree, but I think he's honing a craft as opposed to having limits. The limits are self-imposed for sure, but they try to get to the sense of the story's atmosphere and that's why they come across as "b-movies". Their concerns are whittled down to the bare minimum.

Well, IDK, the Academy/SAG/British Academy didn't fall all over him for it. They ignored him and even ignored his screenwriter. I think the bloom is off the rose.

He established his comfort zone long ago and he absolutely refuses to leave it. His stuff is very predictable now. Coming up? Another unnecessary, gritty, urban remake (Utopia). He needs to try something new, do something different. He won't though. He needs his $10 million up front and 10% on the backend. He'd never make a movie like Birdman or Boyhood.

Well, button wasnt really a flop nor was it a bad film, so what are you talking about? Just because you didnt like it doesnt mean its *beep* especially when it isnt *beep* at all

reply

Sure its his weakest one but as far as romance movies goes, its pretty high up there
