Your three favorite Robert Duvall performances

Drives me crazy when people post this sort of thing in General Discussion. Wade on in, folks.

It's nuts to me that nobody's mentioned The Apostle. That, to me, is his #1 performance. He turned in one of the all-time great performances there.

Now, he's also great in The Godfather, and as others have mentioned, he's wonderful in stuff like Apocalypse Now, and of course, in To Kill a Mockingbird. But, ultimately, for my third pick, I'd have to go with Secondhand Lions.

1. The Apostle
2. The Godfather
3. Secondhand Lions

The Apostle is actually the ONE film that I was going to mention. Duvall not only starred in that film, but he also wrote it and directed. It's an enormous achievement.

It is absolutely one of my favorite and re-watched movies. And even though it's not often regarded as a "Christian movie" in the vein of The Passion of the Christ or Ben-Hur, I also think of it as one of the best Christian films.

reply

It's a way better Christian film than The Passion of the Christ (and I don't even really mind that one!) Yeah, Duvall's achievement there is colossal. It was obviously a labour of love, and he really knocked it out of the park. Plus, the soundtrack is truly bangin'. It's one great gospel song after another. Wonderful stuff. I'm not sure if it's better than Ben-Hur... hard to compare. I'd have to think about it.

My favourite "Christian" movie is Silence.

For the longest time The Apostle was not on Blu-Ray and I have been lamenting this for years. But apparently some Australian company got the rights to produce a region-free special edition and I ordered it immediately once I found out about it. That's now a prized possession.

I still haven't seen Silence. The fact that it's three hours long and obviously rather dour has consistently put me off of sitting down for it.

reply

Awesome! That's definitely a good one for the collection.

I hear you on Silence. There's a reason Marriage Story has been sitting on my Netflix cue since it came out: I know I want to watch it and I'll love the great, artfully-made film, I just never want to watch it when I'm sitting down to pick a movie.

reply

Now Marriage Story I did watch. I thought it was a good film but nothing overwhelming.

BTW speaking of "Christian films," another one that I really enjoyed that I have come to regard as a hidden gem is Risen with Joseph Fiennes. You should check that one out if you haven't seen it.

reply

Risen's on my list. I've heard it's great.

reply

My # 1 is the uncle Hub from "Secondhand Lions"

reply

1) The Apostle ( he was so great in that)
2) Both Godfathers
3) The Natural

reply

Top Gun: Days of Thunder

reply

The Judge, The Great Santini, Apocalypse Now.

reply

Lieutenant Colonel Wilbur "Bull" P. Meechum from The Great Santini; Lieutenant Colonel William "Bill" Kilgore from Apocalypse Now; Judge Joseph Palmer from The Judge.

reply

Good question. Let me think it thru.....

To amp it up, lets ignore the Godfather performances which are obvious.

OK.......

"The Apostle"
"True COnfessions"
"The Great Santini"
