I don't like him - seems smug and condescending.

I've only ever seen him in Godfather 1 and 2 and Falling Down. And in all 3 movies, I don't see a 'great' actor at all. He comes across as smug, uninterested and arrogant.

What movies can I watch that might change that opinion of him?

Just read his quotes on the bio page. They will confirm your suspicions. He's an unfriendly prick and is extremely jealous that he doesn't get the worship his peers have gotten.
I just wish he'd move to Buenos Aries and stay there.

I like a lot of the classic films he's been in, but I can see ANYONE playing the same roles.

I'm sure he gives two *beep* about what you wish he'd do. You must have no life if you're worried about if he's a nice guy or not.

reply

It's not just his characters that are condescending, it's him. And he's quite cocky, too. He's a good actor but as a person, I wouldn't ask him for an autograph in fear of him biting my head off.

He was in my neck of the woods filming a movie a while back, came into the restaurant I manage, and I can say he was very polite. He seemed like he wanted to not be approached or put on the spot, but who can blame a guy for wanting a peaceful dinner out. He was a generous tipper, was very gracious, took a few photographs and chatted for a bit with our staff after his dinner. Actually, he seemed to be slightly socially awkward and kind of shy... actors.

Anyhow, you never truly know what a person's character is like until you really get to know them (Even then is debatable). Maybe he's not a jerk, just misunderstood, staunch, and not fake about how he is :)

Well stated... Thank you, Curious, for enlightening this dim OP!

Duvall is exceptional as Robert E Lee in Gods and Generals. .
Secondhand Lions, Open Range all released in 2003.

Start there before dragging him through the mud with "Smug and Condescending "!!

I only watched Assassination Tango once but I thought it was brilliant, I think that was around the same time.

Duvall is spectacular in at least a dozen movies!!!

This OP should think before being scurrilous!

I don't know whose bio page you've been reading, but this is total bullsh-t - with the exception of a couple of rather strange comments relating to politics (he takes issue with Sean Penn and Jane Fonda speaking out about political topics, wondering why do/did they do it as it "does not further their careers"... as if that were the assumed underlying reason for their activism), he seems entirely reasonable and certainly not bitter. The worst he has to say about any of his fellow actors is that Brando "squandered his talent" (hardly a unique opinion) and that James Dean wasn't as great as Brando and that he "died at the right time" as far as his legendary status is concerned (few would disagree). It would seem that for people like you celebrities have to be fawning over everything and everyone while signing autographs from dawn till dusk with a big, phoney smile on their face in order to escape the accusation of being a "prick". And to say that anyone could have played his roles is just plain ignorant.
