He never ever looked young

He was born like Benjimen Button, except he never grew young.

Google image search him with the word "young", the youngest he ever looked was late 30s, and that's when he was a senior in high school.

Hey Intothenightalone,

Respectfully, I would tend to disagree with you about Duvall always looking old. I would suggest his early balding is the main factor for thinking of Duvall as looking older than his true age. I have a nephew who, like Duvall, was completely bald on the top of his head by his late 20s, and this did make him look older than his classmates who did have full heads of hair. Put a toupee on my nephew or Duvall, and they instantly look younger.

Duvall appeared in dozens of TV shows before his 1962 performance as Boo Radley in To Kill A Mockingbird. Whenever he wore a toupee, he looked his age. He was in three episodes of Combat! between 1965 and 1967. In each of these roles, he wore a toupee, and he certainly did not look older than his true age of his mid 30s. In 1968 he appeared in The Detective with very little hair on the top of his head, and he certainly looked much older than he did a year earlier when he was on Combat!.

In 1976 at about 45 years of age, Duvall played the German Colonel Radl in The Eagle Has Landed, and he still looked young to me. He did not have a chicken neck, and his face was lined as it would become in another ten years. In his performance as Lt. Col. 'Bull' Meechum in The Ace, he still looked the correct age for a WW2 vet, and he was about 48 years of age at the time. When he did Tender Mercies just a few years later, he did it with his few strands of hair, and he certainly did look a lot older than his earlier work.

Does Robert Duvall look old now? Sure he does, but he is now in his mid 80s, and I still enjoy his work.

Hey CE1995,

Nice video that mostly captured the ruggedly handsome Duvall in his midlife years and his later years. Even now in his advanced years, he still maintains a good shape even if he is bare scalp now features the age spots and blotches we all develop as we age. Even now I still think if he were to don a toupe, go with a clean shaven face, and sport a traditional tuxedo he would cut a fine figure at any celebrity function. Then again, he can also still do his craggy featured Gus McCrae role and make a most convincing cow hand and Texas Ranger.

I can still see him in his roles while he was in his mid twenties to mid thirties, and I think most women would have found him quite a handsome man who did look his age. Again I would suggest looking at his early TV work such as his three Combat! episodes where he certainly looked his age. Thanks again for the really nice video of this fine actor.

Best wishes,
Dave Wile

Hey Dave,

I have seen many old TV programs showing a young Robert Duvall. If you want to name some actors who never ever looked young, how about Harry Morgan, Dabs Greer, Abe Vigoda or Strother Martin.

Hey Clint,

I remember when Harry Morgan was fairly young looking in his early TV days. I do not, however, remember anytime when Abe Vigoda or Strother Martin looked any different. I remember Dabs Greer looking kind of old maybe 30 years ago, and then he went downhill from there. Thankfully you and I do not look old at all.

Hey Dave,

To be honest, I have seen old TV shows that show Harry Morgan as a young man. He was on December Bride and Pete and Gladys. He also looked very young in The Ox Bow Incident alongside Henry Fonda. I included him because I once saw a joke where someone had taken a picture of a baby in diapers, and photo-shopped Harry's head onto it.

Hey Clint,

I remember those two shows for early Harry Morgan, and I liked them very much at the time. Not having seen them since originally broadcast, I would like to see if they would still hold the charm for me. A lot of years have passed, and you know how so many shows lose something for us over time.

On a side note, I am now sitting on Whidbey Island on the north side of Seattle. This is a lot nicer in the summer than in their winter monsoon season.

Best wishes,
