Is there actor a better actor who's only won one Oscar?
Its a shame his Oscar came for 'Tender Mercies', a rather forgettable film. His performance in "The Great Santini' is a landmark in American film, Oscar or no. How ironic that he was against De Niro in 'Raging Bull', two once in a generation performances.

It just goes to show how arbitrary the Academy Awards are. I think that this was another case of "this guy is a great actor who's past due, we ought to recognize him for something," even though, as you say, Tender Mercies is hardly Duvall's best performance or his best film. As someone else mentioned, his performance as Bull Meechum in The Great Santini was much more noteworthy than in TM.
The same thing happened with Jason Robards' oscar for All the President's Men, where he's good but hardly memorable (while much better performances such as Once Upon the Time in the West went unrecognized), or Don Ameche's Oscar for Cocoon, where his performance wasn't particularly memorable.

Nothing against Peter O'Toole but Cary Grant's none is more criminal than his.
I agree with you on Cary Grant.
shareHe should have won his 2nd for The Apostle. I love Jack Nicholson but his performance in As Good as It Gets wasn't on the same level as Duvall's.
