Hidden Figures

is currently above the latest star wars film in box office takings, of course that may change.

C'mon. It was Rogue One's 4th weekend, so it was waning. While this film was on it's first run. Rogue One got what? 170 million + on its first weekend. So compare them on their first weekend and your point becomes very week.

That being said, Hidden Figures was a good movie and I hope that one or more of the actresses get recognized for it with at least some award nominations. I went to a twilight matinee (4:00 pm) on a Friday (today actually and I just got out) and the theater was very crowded. Mostly a white crowd too, and older. All positive signs.

It's an awesome movie and I saw this coming. This has so much crossover appeal and the movie is played like a crowd-pleaser which is SO smart because inevitably it shows black women in STEM at NASA can carry the box office at #1 for 2 weeks straight. And just because it's feel-good and not an outright drama doesn't mean it's not subtle and amazing. The way it showed microagressions and the undercurrents of racism was amazing. In fact, that's exactly what Kirsten's character did—she wasn't some raging, bullying "racist" but somebody who didn't or didn't want to understand and therefore never did anything or felt like she couldn't do anything for the black women under her wing. And ALL the actresses were freaking awesome (Costner and Parsons, meh). Love Henson, Spencer, Monae (and of course Dunst, who I think is so smart by playing a supporting, unshowy role in a big movie—her scene with Spencer was truly brilliant acting on both sides. I wish it were longer!)
