In "What About Bob?" was Richard Dreyfuss's character supposed to be a sympathetic one?

I normally would feel sorry for those who were in the situation that Richard Dreyfuss's character was in, unfortunately since Richard Dreyfuss's character wasn't really the nicest guy you could meet I had a hard time feeling sorry for him.

I agree. I agree with someone on the What about Bob board who said that Dr. Marvin was already mentally unstable. He says he never gets upset to Bob which can cause serious problems. He also shows signs of obsessive compulsivensss when he doesn't get the answer about whether the gun or Statue looks good over the fire place mantle. Then there is the fact he talks to his kids using puppets which is also pretty weird.
