Glenn Close has an intensity and a depth that gifted, versatile Meryl does not possess. Also this "visceral" (I hardly ever use that word!) quality: Glenn was terrifying in Fatal Atttaction, and I cannot see the likeable and level-headed Meryl even coming close to doing the same job.

share"Might be"? Close could never have done a role that emotionally demanding, to say nothing of the linguistic ability required. Tell me one role you've seen her in that comes close to the agony of Sophie. Close is good at projecting powerful women, as in Damages and Dangerous Liaisons. But she has nowhere near the range of a Streep or a Redgrave.
