Why'd Cher's movie career die?

She had a pretty good run for like 5 years there Come Back to the 5 and Dime, Silkwood, Mask, Witches of Eastwick, Moonstruck, Suspect then Mermaids a few years later and then it just ended.

A LOT OF GOOD MOVIES THERE...MERMAIDS BEING MY FAVORITE....R.I.P. MISTER HOSKINS...I DONT THINK CHER TRANSLATED TO YOUNGER AUDIENCES WELL...OR MAYBE SHE JUST GOT SLOPPY IN ROLE CHOICE...I REMEMBER SEEING UNFAITHFUL IN THEATERS...WHILE I LIKED IT(I LOVE CHAZZ)...IT WAS DISTINCTLY A FLOP.

I didn’t really know what to make of Unfaithful. I can hardly remember anything about it now, which isn’t the best sign I suppose.

The OP forgot to mention one of her later, and best, performances - Tea With Mussolini. All those grand dames of the English theatre... and Cher. Somehow she managed to outshine them all.

As for her film career being short lived, she never disappeared or really had to retire as such because her music career got a shot in the arm with Believe so she just went back to the other thing she does quite well. Also remember she started in film relatively late so by the time that run of great performances ended she was at the age when good roles start drying up for actresses who aren’t Meryl.

Whatever 💁‍♂️ I’m glad we have those films and fine performances to revisit and enjoy.
