He's certainly not getting it for being a great actor. This honorary Oscar is a joke.

The only quibble I have with it is that he's a tad too young (only 62). But I think it's a good choice to honor not only him but also for the Academy to recognize Hong Kong cinema and kung fu films, a genre they very, very rarely recognize.

reply

I think his acting is pretty underated in some of his HK films, some have not even been seen as much as his American Films

At the top of my head
New Police Story
Heart of Dragon

Class is Pain 101. Your instructor is Casey Jones

I would add Crime Story and Shinjuku Incident.

And congratulations to Jackie! Jackie responded in Weibo account (Chinese twitter) that he's hoping to win another Oscars in the future in a lighthearted tone.

I think that it is absolutely great news! I am really surprised at it, but it's well deserved. The man has accomplished a great deal and it's only right that he be recognized for it.

1. You're confusing his acting skills with his ability to speak English. He really isn't a bad actor.

2. This is an Honorary Academy Award and they give those to "celebrate motion picture achievements that are not covered by existing Academy Awards" which includes all kinds of movie industry people - not just actors. Read about it here: https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Academy_Honorary_Award

Stuntman is a profession within the movie industry too - and in that field Jackie is second to none.

I think this award is well deserved and shows the Academy "getting" something that isn't what awards are usually about. Put it this way: Kung Fu action is far from the "fine dining" of the movie industry, but Jackie has done it so well he still gets an Academy Award - hell yeah!

"I am Jack's total lack of surprise."

reply

Since it is given for achievements NOT covered by other Academy Awards, he is receiving it for something else than acting.

I reacted the same as you when I've first heard it, but if they give it to him for fight choreography / action directing etc. in his Hong Kong movies in the past 40 years, it is a well deserved award.
