In the early 90’s, Gabriel Byrne was known primarily to art house crowds for movies like Miller’s Crossing. He had appeared in a few mainstream Hollywood movies, but they mostly failed to catch on. His then-current wife, Ellen Barkin, was a bigger movie star at the time.
