Used to be a big fan.

Peewee's Big Adventure, Batman, and Edward Scissor hands were awesome movies with odd aesthetics and fun stories.
A lot of people like Batman Returns and A Nightmare Before Christmas but that's kind of when I lost interest.
I enjoyed Sleepy Hollow the first time I saw it, but it doesn't hold up for me.

Anyone else see a decline in interest in Burton? He's still an iconic director, but I'm not a fan anymore.

His films all started to look the same.

reply

You're not wrong.

I used to really like Tim Burton, but his movies with Depp and Bonham Carter all were the same and I really lost interest and respect for all three of them.

I think "Mars Attacks" was the last film of his I really enjoyed for all its camp but also his subtle love-letter to 50s/60s cold war Sci-Fi horror as well.

I think he would have faired better if he did more movies like "Ed Wood" but his movies like "Sleepy Hollow" felt like Disney-inspired cash grabs.

reply

Good call on Mars Attacks.

I still think the worst is the willy Wonka debacle.

Yeah, they've become repetitively whimsical, and it's been a long time since he's made a really top-flight movie... or even one that's just plain fun. I think the last movie of his that I really liked was "The Corpse Bride", which was piffle and the usual sort of whimsy, but it worked and it was enjoyable.

I had hopes for a new direction in 2014 when he made "Big Eyes", which was a bizarre real-life story, and while the movie was indeed a change of pace... it wasn't very good. He's really slowed down on directing films since then.

Perhaps we expect too much from him. Tim Burton provided us with a great esthetic and some fantastic films. I'm actually happy just revisiting his original work.

Perhaps he should stick to production. He's good for that.

reply

There's a magic in his older films, a real sense of almost child-like wonder, that doesn't seem to be there any more.

reply

Yeah, it's obvious he can't tap into that anymore, which is a shame. When I was a kid, a new film from him was an event.

Now, I just go "Dumbo? Really?"

That's a great description of how it was back in the 90's.

Just found out that he was initially going to direct Stay Tuned in 1991. He turned it down to direct Batman Returns. He made the right choice, but Stay Tuned would have been a great project for him at that time.

That's interesting. I didn't know that.

reply

To me he started going down Charlie and the Chocolate Factory onwards. Now he seems to be more interested in having CGI in his movies.

reply

He seemed to peak with Sweeny Todd. I consider it a masterpiece and the best film of 2007.

After that, he hasn’t done anything that I would call great.

What is Tim Burton’s damage? His early films were fun and different. Then he became a creepy crashing bore. What happened?
