Reader Blind: The military records of this deceased A+ action star (Charles Bronson) which contain a series of cognitive tests he took explain the short terse literal answers he often gave to reporters' questions throughout his career. He did not have a major lead role until his 40's and wasn't a big star until his 50's but how his career took off then. The thing was the actor had diagnosed intellectual disability. He was what they might call in less politically correct terms "retarded". He could not read or write and had trouble understanding simple concepts. His brutal and poverty stricken childhood did not help. Luckily, he had good minders around him throughout his entire career especially his second wife (Jill Ireland), a celebrity herself whom he worked with and who did a very good looking out for him. Naaw, he seemed smart to me.

reply

I think so too.

Bronson was the eleventh of fifteen children born (of lithuanian descent) in Pennsylvania.....does anyone really think he gave a flying fuck about cognitive tests in the army (an 'army' that had no problem with him actually serving in, regardless of such assessment?)

As others have (so eloquently) stated, Bronson was a very sharp-conversationalist (and also one of the biggest stars of the seventies) If only I could have such a (quote) "intellectual disability?"

The OP is full of shit

If he was retarted he never would’ve survived as a major movie star let alone a long and prosperous movie career.

reply

As his military records seem to indicate, he might have been semi-literate at the time he took the tests; however, that does not mean he was retarded. I saw him in an extended interview with Dick Cavett, and he seemed to have perfectly normal intelligence.

Yep. Some people just never learned to read. Some people were severely dyslexic and got shoved through the school system undiagnosed. People would be surprised how many people get through the school system without ever learning to read, especially years ago.

reply

Not true, quite the opposite: he was a genius! He spoke Russian and Lithuanian learning English as a 3rd language. Have you ever seen him interviewed? Very sharp, which is obvious from all his films/shows. If anyone diagnosed him as a 'tard THEY must be a 'tard!

Those are shit sources! Read IMDb, he isn't dumb: https://www.imdb.com/name/nm0000314/bio?ref_=nm_ov_bio_sm

He came from extreme poverty and worked in a coal mine as a child until he enlisted during WWII. I don’t know if his lack of education had any bearing on these so called test in the military, but the man was not retarded. I wouldn’t trust either of the sources supplied by the OP anyway.

What an outrageous calumny !
