When did you hear?

Did you hear about his death the night it happened or the morning after? I'm wondering for those who heard that night if they stayed up all that night thinking about it, reading about it, listening to his music etc.

I got a call from Iman the night of, and I we spent a couple hours commiserating and sharing fond memories of him... no big deal, though.

I don't recall when I learned that he was gone, but I recall, vividly, what my reaction was. It was as if my spirit had been walking down the sidewalk and someone dropped a safe on it from 30 stories up. And I was shocked. I had never felt that I had "followed" Bowie. I loved, and bought, his Heroes album, and his Labyrinth movie. I bought the movie The Prestige, but not because he was in it. But Bowie had always been THERE, doing amazing things, jumping onto the internet back when America Online seemed like a bit of magic, embodying a personal style that had been absent from the world since the death of Fred Astaire. I had always thought of Bowie as being like Christmas: it will always be there. There will always be time to get to know it better, when I want to,

And then he stopped being there. The Universe pulled the plug. David Jones/Bowie/Ziggy Stardust was gone. The man who modeled Frank Sinatra was gone.

And like Francis Albert, he cannot ever die.
