Ferrari vs Ford movie with christian bale and Matt Damon

Why do i get the feeling that this is gonna be more of a character piece and less of a spectacle ? Your thoughts

reply

I'm confused. Bale bailed out of the Michael Mann movie: Enzo Ferrari. That is now going to star Hugh Jackman. Now Bale is here again involved in a similar project. Why? I don't even know the plot of each movie, but I imagine it must have some in common.

I think it has to do with director and script and box office appeal. You see,Michael Mann stopped being a great director more than a decade ago.I personally think he can’t recover from his slump ,so I think it’s very wise of Christian Bale to not work with him. That movie reportedly costs 80 million...thats pretty huge money and if it bombs it all falls on Christian Bale star power. He has made questionable career choices in exchange for doing favors/taking risks. The promise is a favor he did for former mgm head who has been dying to tell story about Armenian genocide. That thing is a huge bomb it made 7 million on a 100 million budget. So Christian Bale can’t keep taking risks just because he can.He is not DiCaprio who has lots of hits to make up for a bomb. The James mangold movie on the other hand has lot of studio backing.20th century fox is trying to make it and it wants James mangold to direct after Logan and it has Matt Damon attached as well,so it’s commercially and critically safer choice. You can’t go wrong with Matt Damon pairing for box office and 20th century fox for oscar campaign.Only wild card is James mangold direction skills. Logan has source material to make 700 million but I am not sure if he can deliver other non ip properties.

reply

Yeah, I remember now that Bale reportedly dropped out of the project due to health issues. But now that you mentioned it, he probably used it as a way out of the project to avoid Michael Mann. Mangold seems like a safer choice, but he is still inconsistent.

reply

It might be both that he thought script was no good nor he didn’t believe Mann could pull it off or may be he couldn’t gain weight fast enough but since he did it for Cheney movie I think it’s the former. As for James mangold yup I agree with you and that’s one of my main issues with Christian Bale or may be he cant control the situation. But he has never been able to work with true auteurs like Scorsese or innaritu or Tarantino after he became a huge star. Instead he is working with smaller directors on risky projects which fail sometimes and succeed sometimes.I however think he should avoid doing favors or working in projects with 0 chance to succeed .A director who made a good movie a decade has very less chance of succeeding again. So I am confused why he worked with Zang yimou on flowers of war and as I said the promise...I mean who cares about Chinese and Armenian genocide?

His roles choices make no sense whatsover. Bale is the complete opposite of DiCaprio. With DiCaprio, it seems like he never ever takes risks, and only chooses to be in top notch projects. While Bale seems to be actively pursuing risky projects. Then again, nobody does what he does, losing that much weight for the Machinist, for instance. It seems like he just does what he thinks he should do, he doesn't care if it's going to be successful or not, and I respect him for that. But for the sake of his filmography, I think he should start being more picky and selective for his future roles. It's about time he starts working with Scorsese and the likes.

The thing with DiCaprio which surprises me a lot is that he had a clear vision for his career early on , so he used his titanic fame wisely. He never made a romantic comedy. He always tried to use his star power to get funds for movies by top directors. His relationship with Scorsese according to me is more transactional as less passion. They might have passion for their own projects but the involvement of the other is purely transactional. Wolf of Wall Street was a passion for DiCaprio not Scorsese. He took the script to Scorsese and pestered him to direct it. Scorsese passion project is Hugo, silence,Irishmen and not aviator or wolf of Wall Street . DiCaprio helped gangs of new York to be made with his star power and so scorsese helped Aviator get made with his direction and you succeed long enough other directors want to get you so you can help them finance their movies aka inception,Django Unchained or once upon a time in Hollywood.

Christian Bale on the other hand has struggled a lot.Even after American Psycho he couldn’t get roles. If you read his biography by his former assistant you would know that he was beaten by DiCaprio for many roles even titanic. Its only after Batman begins he got his footing. But the bad part is DiCaprio was succeeding at the same time.So Christian Bale choice is either to compete with DiCaprio in star roles in prestige movies which need top directors to succeed which he clearly can’t get as all of them are working with DiCaprio or take transformative roles which he felt he can successfully pull of.so he chose the latter I think.

However I always wanted to see him in wolf of Wall Street kind of role which actually makes 400 million dollars just due to his star power and get nominated for best actor oscar. He doesn’t need to win just nominate. He came close to it during exodus gods and kings but Ridley Scott screwed up that movie and whole whitewashing thing screwed up any chance it had.

Exactly. I think he is just as good as DiCaprio, Edward Norton, Tom Hardy, among others. But doesn't play too strategically. He is doing fine as of right now, but he could have soared high after the Dark Knight. But he decided to star in Terminator Salvation. What the hell. American Hustle was a great role for him, even if the movie itself wasn't that great. After that I expected to see him in more leading roles, in bigger movies. He has the talent, just needs to get working on it.

lot of people give him shit for terminator but I think he took it as a challenge to invigorate the franchise in a clever manner and not in a dumbed down manner and of course it back fired. In his recent interview he said that after everyone told him not to take it he took it as a challenge and he clearly should have listened. All he needs is a couple of movies that appeal to younger fans like me. Something with intensity and epic ness and masculinity and adrenaline. Younger audience like wolf of Wall Street and Django unchained. They don’t like American Hustle or the big short. Its less macho and more brainy. So he needs to work with Christopher Nolan again or Tarantino or some auteur who has a fan base of his own and collaborate with him. Hateful eight made 160 million with no star so I am sure Django 400 million box office has not just DiCaprio star power but Quentin Tarantino as well.
Instead he seems to be doing either adult fair like American Hustle or the big short or he is doing these outlandish projects which a layman can say won’t work. The promise is a joke. Even hostiles is least commercially viable project.Like who would work with a director again after their first collaboration bombed? Out of the Furnace is a bomb. Who the hell would work with a director who gave them bomb the first time.

I personally hate Scott Cooper because he is this guy who is trying to be like Paul Thomas Anderson or Quentin Tarantino but he always comes short. For a while People thought Jeff bridges oscar win for crazy heart is due to director but in reality it’s due to his overdue status. However hostiles is his best work.I am sure Leonardo DiCaprio isn’t that interested in working with Ridley Scott after body of lies back fired and also with Clint Eastwood . So may be bale need to wait and take projects only from top directors and not work with subpar directors who have 60/40 chance of making a bad movie. But in reality I think he is crazy enough to work with Scott cooper.

reply

"But in reality I think he is crazy enough to work with Scott cooper."

Hahaha. He definitely is. Being young as well, I feel the same. The Wolf of Wall Street went on to become one of my favorite movies ever, everytime I catch it on cable I still laugh at the same stuff. The whole movie is pretty much just an exposition of explicit scenes, but it's ridiculously funny.

American Hustle was appealing to me because I love crime-drama stories. In a way it reminded me of Goodfellas. Big Short was one that I only watched due to the cast, I really like all those guys, so it was a must for me. But then again, what kind of audience does The Big Short appeal to? lol.

I hope he gets nominated for the dick cheney movie.

DiCaprio has created a brand for himself....the brand only puts out high budget sure fire oscar worthy movies with auteurs aka Scorsese,Quentin and I can easily see him working with Nolan again. If you observe closely DiCaprio isn’t taking any chances with the directors he doesn’t wanna work with.He hasn’t made a movie since 2015. That to me shows that he is too afraid to take risks and would rather wait for the director he want to work with.I think his break was because of Scorsese was busy with Irishman which might be unplanned after silence.

But he still has the scripts being worked on.He has the da Vinci biopic, devil in the white city,Roosevelt movies being written so as soon as Scorsese frees up he will start working on it. So he will not take chances with a director like James mangold,David o Russell or Adam McKay and would rather wait than make a movie with them.I am not sure what he is gonna if Scorsese dies!!!

As for Cheney movie I am not confident that the movie would be a awards player like I would be confident for a movie by DiCaprio. Adam McKay is still being looked down upon as this one trick pony comedy director turned serious and he is too stupid to put on soo much weight to play dick Cheney because at the end of the day knowing oscars I find it hard that they would award best actor for the role of dick Cheney. As controversial as Winston Churchill is at least he was helpful in winning war against hitler. But dick Cheney has nothing good about him.If i were him,I would use physical transformation while portraying someone good and not evil real people.I mean this is the same guy who put on Oldman make up for fricking exodus. How embarrassing it is to method act for a bad movie.

Indeed. Leo takes absolutely no risks. He tries too hard, he would never give an indie director the timeof his day. And that's the side of him that I dislike. I wonder what he is going to do when he reaches old age. Deniro is out there, taking on anything that is thrown at him. Leo and Bale could really benefit from exchanging some career insights.

The way you talk about DiCaprio is so sad. Dude is literally the worst actor of all time. There is a world of cinema dating from silent films up until the 1960's that one HAS to check out if one truly loves film and you are fucking stuck on DiCaprio lol, it's so pathetic. DiCaprio, Nolan, Fincher, Aronofsky, Tarantino, Scorcese, what the fuck is it about them that the fanboys drool over them? Is it some sexual fascination? I don't get it.

reply

Your anger should be pointed at actual fanboys not us.We are actually critical of him.As to your question about sexual fascination ,I am sure many of their fans aren’t gay.The reason people drool over them is because of one word “success”.Success cures everything. The commonality between all the names you listed is that they are all consistently successful. They have at least 5 movies back to back that are awesome this creates a cult.A group of people want to share the happiness of success of one person.Enjoying one movie is one thing but obsessing about an actor has to do with sharing their happiness due to their success. Its same as sports. You aren’t playing the game but you share happiness when someone scores a point.

You don’t find the same obsession for Tom Cruise or Brad Pitt or Johnny Depp because they haven’t made 5 awesome movies consecutively. It’s “what have you done for me lately” culture especially in movie .

reply

well I am a fan of many artists and it's not about success but about their greatness and the art. I've known for a long time that the obsession with those hacks has nothing to do with movies. And you are a fanboy, otherwise you wouldn't even pay attention to them.

reply

I am a fanboy of practical celebrities..to me celebrities who have overcome adversities are much more of inspiration aka christian bale than celebrities who have every success given to them on a silver platter aka dicaprio

reply

I couldn't care less.
