5. Edward Scissorhands

Of those, I think he showed his genius as Yossarian in Catch-22. It's almost as if Joseph Heller had him in mind when he wrote the book.

reply

I need to see it again -- he only reaches no. 4 on my list because I was not bowled over by the adaptation as a whole. But, years after seeing it, Arkin's performance remains etched in my mind. Certainly, it's hard to imagine a better Yossarian.

reply

Yes, the movie didn't quite capture the insanity of the characters, but then that would have been almost impossible to do, given the deliberately complex nature of Heller's writing. But Arkin WAS Yossarian. I think the man is probably a bit like that character in real life.

reply

You are really boring me putting these "Top Five Performances" on several different older stars. That's a subjective appraisal. You don't even offer your readers the courtesy of telling folks why you think these are the top performances. I.don't do "lists" and frankly regard them as a little bit vulgar, the pasttime of retards. PLUS-not one of these stupid mutherfuckers has put "The In-Laws" (1979) on their top five!

Melatron, you almost sound like a character in Catch-22 yourself! ;) Are you doing that deliberately? :)

reply

Ya never know, Popcorny. Thanks!

Hehe. :)

It's true, The In Laws was good. But was it better than Glengarry Glen Ross? By more than three places?

I have never heard of The Other Side of Hell. It looks like a great showcase for Arkin... I shall try to track it down. :)

reply

It's on YouTube, I think. It's long and very sad (imagine a grimmer One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest), but he's great in it.

reply

Thanks! I shall definitely check it out, but make sure I'm in the right frame of mind first... :)

1. Wait Until Dark
2. The Russians Are Coming! The Russians Are Coming!
3. The In-Laws
4. Glengarry Glen Ross
5. The Seven Percent Solution (forgot about that one, didn’t you?)

reply

I have never seen The Seven Percent Solution. It’s been on my watchlist for a long time - I definitely need to get around to watching it, it sounds very appealing.

reply

Seven Percent Solution is a good one! Had this been a top six list, it would have just made it.
