I'd Rather She Not Come Back for Alien 5

I think Sigourney Weaver is a tremendous actress and the Alien movies are my favorite movies but I would prefer if she doesn't return to the franchise. I feel that Alien 3 has aged much better than people give it credit for(particularly because of the Assembly Cut) and makes a definitive conclusion to Ripley's story (I don't consider A:R as part of the franchise). As far as I'm concerned, Ripley's story ended with Alien 3.

I think Neill Blomkamp's biggest strength as a filmmaker is that he has a great eye for detail and is a very good world-builder. Alien 5 is an exciting opportunity to expand the universe in a way 3 and 4 didn't. I think it's a franchise that would benefit from having new characters instead of relying on Ripley to tie everything together.

Sigourney Weaver is the only element that will make any movie with a Xenomorph a legitimate Alien film. So I disagree.

Also Prometheus is the studios chance at moving away from Ripley. This is Ripleys story.

Agree, it's not an Alien movie without Sigourney Weaver.😃

They should try ending Ripley's story properly, maybe make Alien 3 and Alien: Resurrection a bad dream Ripley had in the tube lol.

I'll have to admit that Alien 3 and Alien: Resurrection were entertaining, but I don't mind if Blomkamp "removes" them or makes the sequels work somehow.

Although, I did have a problem with Hicks and Newt being killed off. 😣

She's 65, she's been in four Alien movies already, and by including her character the writers would be seriously hampering the narrative possibilities. If they follow new characters they can do anything their imaginations dream up, and revitalize the franchise with compelling new characters with fresh stories to tell.

If they bring back Ripley they've got to explain why she's fighting the Aliens for the umpteenth time, and they have to follow the events of the first two movies at least. They've already done those stories, and they weren't very good.

Since Sigourney Weaver is already attached to the project, I'm hoping her role is limited to a flashback or a cameo.

I can't say I agree, Xys. For one, nobody knows where the new movie would fall. Is it a sequel to ALIENS, ignoring A³ and A:R or would it include them? I think one has only to look at the long series of graphic novels and books set in the Alien universe to see that it's very difficult to create interesting characters without the presence of Ripley. Without her, plots seem to follow conventional horror tropes. And how many would argue that the characters in Prometheus, ostensibly an Alien film, were nearly as interesting as those in Alien or Aliens? Would Aliens have been as good WITHOUT Ripley?

As for "fighting Aliens" there's no reason to expect Weaver to take on the same action hero role that Ford attempted to in Crystal Skull. The Ripley character's strengths have always been her determination, creativity, and confidence. While I don't think Bloomkamp writes very good characters, especially women, I'm hoping that he will have a co-writer that realizes that Ripley has never been a Schwarzenegger/Stallone stand-in. The film could be very, very good if it returns to its roots and focuses on the psychological impact on its characters, something which Weaver is VERY good at.

P.S. I think Weaver still looks terrific at nearly 66 and would have no problems pulling off the Ripley character again.

I couldn't agree more.
Exactly my point of view.

I thought this project was supposed to be more Aliens-inspired rather than taking cues from the Ridley Scott original. I'd love to see another film like the first, and I could be wrong, but I thought the director had talked about how he wants this one to feel more like Cameron's version.

Anyway, where does it go from there? Are they really tossing out Alien3? Are we going to see Ripley, Hicks and Newt wake up from hypersleep somehow decades older? Like I said, I'm skeptical because it's been done before and those stories didn't turn out to be very compelling.

As for Prometheus and its terrible characters...that was all Damon Lindelof's doing. He shouldn't be allowed near another science fiction script again, ever. I agree that none of them were relatable of likeable, but in the hands of a solid writer there can be plenty of interesting people in the Alien universe.

Why don't they bring Ripley back as an android? They cloned her for Resurrection so they have all her brain history or whatever they want to call it. It would make an interesting concept and add a touch of irony as she initially distrusted the 'droids after the first Alien movie. It's always seemed to me to be the perfectly logical and totally feasible explanation for having Ripley back in the franchise.

I guess? Actor Lance Henriksen did as Bishop and played as the androids human designer for the company at the finale of Alien3.
