To me it doesn't matter his real life capabilities as a fighter. He had a magnificent physique, and performed his moves well for the camera, and most importantly made it look good.
I think that's the true strength of JCVD movies over his contemporaries. Seagal, while not as physically impressive, also made his skill look very good on film, but became less desirable to view with the weight gain.

shareWhat I loved about JCVD is you could see all his moves. Everything was a little slowed down and telegraphed, but it looked amazing on film. And he was able to carry this across all his movies, no matter what the different production crews he was working with.

Well, women fancied him, and that certainly helped. Other action starts were either too muscular for women's tastes (Arnold) or not that handsome (Stallone). Lundgren was also liked by he made fewer blockbusters I reckon
