VOD With Cheese: What the Hell Happened to John Travolta’s Career?

Twenty-five years ago, ‘Pulp Fiction’ revived John Travolta. Now, after decades of hits, he’s stuck in a straight-to-video void. Is Travolta’s phenomenal movie-star run finally finished?

His lavish lifestyle and constant requests for money from an organization have taken their toll on the bank balance of this former A+ list dual threat actor, who is now probably B+ in the work he gets, but is a permanent A lister. His projects keep getting worse in quality as he chases paychecks to get through the later years in life. John Travolta (Scientology) (John Travolta's latest movie, 'The Fanatic,' makes a mere $3,153) (What the Hell Happened to John Travolta’s Career?)

And I bet he is making a lot of money doing straight to video.

I remember reading during his "lean" years of the late 80's/early90's, he as still making over $2,000,000 a movie (not bad in those days). John is doing well. Don't worry about him.

Plus VOD doesn't have the stigma it once did.

His son died in 09, just after he completed From Paris with Love. He then took 2 x years off to grieve.
That is what happened. When he finally returned he received zero offers. He was forgotten.
He was cast in Savages soly based on that Uma Thurman had signed on"urging" Stone to consider him. Ironically Uma Thurman part was cut in post production.

His biggest part in 10 years was American Crime Story. The rest, those VOD flicks he was paid scale.

reply

"VOD flicks he was paid scale" You must be close to him to know that for a fact.

reply

VODs: All the budget went on him and he can do what he wants and makes as many demands as he wants, thats why he takes them.

reply

No, he cant!

reply

Of course he can. A low budget VOD with no star to name of is dead and buried, probably won't even get greenlit.

Add John Travolta or Nic Cage, they come in, film gets greenlit, gets some press based on their star power, they demand half the budget and basically strut around set like kings.

You think Travolta is cowering in a corner over a two bit production with a no name director, no name crew and no name actors. He is paid based on his name. His name gets the movie made its as simple as that.

reply

I think you are confusing the movie making process in the 1980´s & 90´s with that if today. You are also referring to the term "greenlit" that comes from a major movie studio 12 films per year agreement.
Speed Kills (2018) did not get greenlit, In a Valley of Violence (2016) did not get greenlit as they are part of the mass production that is VOD today. These films find stars very close to the shooting schedule, a 15 -30 day shoot, actors and directors are paid SAG-AFTRA Rates ( little money ) where the producers make all the profits.
In the past the studio & lead actors where the top dogs, now its a producers run business. John Travolta has been smart and started to produce his own films as of late. If he was to "basically strut around set like kings" he would be loosing his own money.

A lot of it has to do with his age. There just aren't that many major roles for someone who's old enough for social security.

A lot of actors see their careers go downhill as they get into their 50s and beyond, and end up in low budget productions if they want to keep working. Either that or they end up taking fewer parts or retire completely.

reply

He makes godawful choices. He walks into any old role, mostly comes out smelling of crap, occasionally smelling of roses with a decent director who can give him the guidance he so badly needs and it revives his career because he does have charisma and talent but cannot channel it well himself.

reply

He doesn't have much say in the matter. He has to make the movies that Zorpdurk the Unflappable instructs him to make. It's all part of an intricate cosmic chess match against Xenu and his minions. Besides, Travolta doesn't need money, his reward is an increase in Thetan levels from the galactic core.

reply

It is a myth that John Travolta had a "comeback" and is on the downturn.

Since the very beginning of his career, Travolta has consistently accepted whatever comes his way, no matter what the quality. It's just that every once in awhile, he would come across the right project and hit gold. But instead of being more selective when he had a hit, he would just go back to accepting any job.

So, what's happened to Travolta's career is what happened to his career after Saturday Night Fever, after Look Who's Talking, after Pulp Fiction. Instead of sitting a good script, he's just accepting crap (as usual). Making matters worse is that the talent pool in Hollywood is so small that it's highly unlikely he'll come across another script on the level of a Pulp Fiction or SNF, or a commercially successful franchise in the vein of Look Who's Talking.

reply

Who cares if he accepts whichever role comes his way though. He's an actor, he acts, he has fun, he makes money. He had a lot of success, he had a lot of duds. I'm sure he's enjoying life.
