Two great things in the article:
1 Penn and Theron are in 'decent terms' ( 'saw him yesterday' 'we both care about each other to know we care about this movie together')
2. Most importantly, the movie is still being edited.

Theron had this interview before the movie was submitted to Cannes. She probably met Penn long before that. So it means the movie was completed.
