FACT: Tarantino is NOT a great director.
He is adequate at taking ideas from other movies and using them to construct his own versions, but as far as originality or groundbreaking talent, he has none. Anything original he does inject is cringe-worthy, from his insistence to always have his own Cro-Magnon face on screen and trying to act at some point, to the dialogue he considers 'hip' or 'cool', all this is just pathetic attempts to feed his needy ego.
He certainly has a very high opinion of himself, and has no problem coming across as a major douchebag in the process, as evidenced by most any interview he's ever had.
RD was pretty good, I'll give him that but again, it's just thinly-veiled plagiarism whose style went against the common Hollywood fare at the time, thus making it seem 'original' and 'fresh'. He peaked in PF, and it's been downhill ever since.
Ever notice that at some points in any of his movies, any one of the characters will start talking like The Great Quentin Tarantino himself? That's because either he can't write dialogue that actually suits the character in question, or he cannot resist the desperate need he feels to constantly be stroking his own ego.
