Firstly, no, I do not get this same vibe at all. I'm sure he has a strong artistic ego of sorts but considering the volume of his work and the classics he has cinematically authored, nothing about his attitude or demeanor pertaining to his filmography seems smug in the least to me.

Secondly, I completely disagree that the films of John Carpenter and Steven Spielberg are not deep. There is almost always a lot more running on multiple levels throughout their films than a first, superficial glance may demonstrate.
